A first birthday is really a celebration for the whole family — and the photos last a lifetime. The happy news is that dressing a one-year-old well is mostly about comfort, because a comfortable baby is a smiling baby.

Think in three outfits (or fewer)

Many first birthdays have a natural rhythm: a special outfit for the ceremony or cake-cutting, something easy for the cake smash, and a comfortable set for the rest of the day. You don't need all three — but planning the arc helps.

For the main moment

This is where a lehenga, a frilly party dress, or a little kurta set earns its place. Keep embellishment away from the neck and wrists where it can scratch, and choose soft, breathable linings. Ties and poppers beat stiff zips on a wriggly one-year-old.

For the cake smash

Pick something you don't mind getting covered in buttercream. A simple romper or a washable cotton outfit is perfect — the star of these photos is the mess, not the outfit.

Practical reminders

  • Avoid anything with small detachable parts (beads, buttons) at this age
  • Have a backup outfit ready — accidents happen
  • Dress for the room temperature, and keep a soft layer nearby
  • Break in any new shoes, or skip them; soft booties are fine

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book.
