How to Care for Silk and Embroidered Kids' Clothing

by Adarsh Singh 22 Jul 2026

A good silk lehenga is often worn a handful of times and then handed to a younger cousin. Whether it survives that journey depends almost entirely on how you store it.

Read the label first

Most silk, net and heavily embroidered pieces are dry-clean only. Washing them at home — even by hand — can pull threads, dull the sheen and cause colour to run into the lining.

Deal with stains immediately, gently

Blot, never rub. Use a clean dry cloth to lift as much of the spill as possible, then take the garment to a dry cleaner and tell them exactly what caused the stain. Don't apply water or household stain remover to silk or gotta patti work — it can leave a permanent ring.

Air it before you store it

After an event, hang the outfit inside out in a shaded, airy spot for a few hours. This lets perspiration and any lingering perfume evaporate. Storing an outfit straight into a bag traps moisture, and moisture is what causes yellowing over time.

Store it properly

  • Wrap in muslin or cotton cloth, never plastic — plastic traps humidity.
  • Fold along different lines each time you store it, so creases don't become permanent weak points.
  • Keep heavy embroidery folded inward so it doesn't snag the fabric.
  • Add a sachet of dried neem leaves or a cedar block rather than mothballs directly against the fabric.
  • Store flat rather than hanging where possible; long-term hanging stretches the shoulders of heavy garments.

Check on it once a year

Take stored pieces out annually, refold them differently and let them breathe for an hour. It takes ten minutes and prevents most of the damage that shows up in an outfit you'd forgotten about.

Small repairs, done early

A single loose gotta thread pulls a dozen more if it's ignored. Snip loose threads flush rather than tugging them, and get seams restitched before they open further.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
